a quality phono cartridge produces about 15-20db less output than typical line level, and on top of that, you need to
apply RIAA equalization to get the sound balance right. you need something with a proper phono preamp. cartridges that can directly drive a line level input will damage the record on each play.

Should be a relatively simple matter of taking the output from the turntable to and patching it to the aux. input on a sound card. You have to be careful to match the impedance correctly, (not that I think you could actually damage anything), the kid in question was using a relatively high end direct drive turntable and he needed a preamp.
