at times like this, i am always reminded of the exhibit in NYC of a set of
images of all the trash containers on the 42nd St. they were all carefully
composed to be as identical as possible, vertically straight down centered
so that the sidewalk was parallel to the top edge. contents obviously were
different. school photography, identified from the labels, lives in a world
all its own where, once you have the basics of exposure and composition
down, B&W "socially relevant" photography is real photography and everything
else isn't.

Herb's thesis is obviously not applicable to every time and situation. but
value is as good a barometer of photographic worth as anything else I've
seen here or elsewhere. Your argument is totally fallacious. Consider, for
example, what a da Vinci is worth today in comparison to a Kincade.
