Yes, I think John is correct.
Your 28 mm. lens will not get in much more than baby redwoods, unless
you are 50 meters/yards or so back (in which case their height won't be
apparent). Concentrate on details and patterns within your level of the
redwood forest. Get photos of people next to redwoods with a 15 foot
diameter.
If money is a concern, you might consider picking up an inexpensive
Zenitar 16 mm f2.8 fisheye for those redwoods. It is quite sharp for
such a lens.
But you will have a hard time capturing the feel of those redwoods on 35 mm.
