I guess better, in this case, means that much of the functionality available in the D is easier to get to. The Ds has a number of things that might be important buried a bit deeper in the menu system, where the D would have a dedicated button or switch. The Ds is faster with a larger buffer however, though the default quality settings when taking a picture are a bit more garish. I've handled both and both are fine cameras. I like the D better but that's
a matter of taste.

Better? In what way? I just see a different feature set. Same sensor.
What's better?

Just a ramble: When the DS first came out a number of people complained
that the camera used SD cards. To small, too expensive, not enough
capacity. That was a few months ago. Now the capacities of the SD cards
has been substantially increased, prices have come down to where (at least
on the sites I've checked) they are on par with CF cards, Pentax has
upgraded the DS software to be able to use larger capacity cards, the cards
have gotten faster as well, and more and more cameras are using SD cards
instead of CF.

Things change fast in the digital world and today's better is tomorrow's
obsolete.

I still think that *istD is slightly better than *istDS (I know, Godfrey, you probably disagree ;-) )...

We may discuss this over good plate of sushi, you know...

Notice, if you get *istD, you won't have to sell your CF cards - one less headache...
