One time I took off on a short trip away but forgot my battery charger, so unlike I normally do I though that I'd power the camera down between shooting sessions. I found that the *ist D can be turned off whilst it's writing to the card but it's not energy conservative to do so because the rear LCD wakes up to display an hourglass whilst it continues to write the file.
