Hi Ann

All you need is a card reader to use Windows 98. I now have WinXP but
I still download to the computer via a card reader.

Peter is right - the Pentax software doesn't run on 98 so, if you
shoot RAW you need another raw converter.

One you could consider is Silkypix - it has a free mode and it will
run on 98.

No need to go to Windows 2000 unless you really want to....

Elements 3 and 4 have a very good RAW convertor. You may have to bump up the
memory in your machine. Not sure if 98 works with newer Elements (or
vice-a-versa).

As far as the USB thing goes, just use a card reader. It's easier anyway.
Card readers that are USB 2 are backward compatible. I use a Belkin one that
has
4 slots (because I also have an Optio Si4 that uses a SD card). It's the
8-in-1 Belkin card reader.

OTOH, welcome to the world of digital! (Yeah, know you had a digital P&S
before, but same idea, getting a DSLR is a whole other bag).

The world of digital! -- where one upgrade usually necessitates another!!!
Ta-boom!
