That used to be my experience too! I don't think any one of the half-dozen or so cars I owned in the UK did not have rust in them after a comparatively short time. In Oz, it seems(at least in Queensland) they go on for ever - serious rust is comparatively rare. Has to be down to the climate, which although damp in summer, is also hot, so maybe the wet dries off quickly rather than sitting there sulking and creating rust! And, of course, no salt on the roads in winter...
