I also generally prefer an aperture ring, but I think I see what you are 
saying. I simply haven't had the opportunity to use one of those large 
teles myself... Two points, though:

   1. It is generally the smaller/shorter lenses that have started
      coming without an aperture ring, not the long tele lenses you are
      talking about.
   2. Many of them were pretty much designed for cameras that have just
      one wheel or a "rocker". So the manufacturers have essentially
      replaced two controls by a setup with a "mode" switch + one
      control. I quite definitely dislike that.

Also, this seems to be a point where the users are so divided that the 
suppliers probably ought to give them an option to choose the control 
mode. Like, via an aperture ring with an "auto" setting, perhaps...
