I wish you wouldn't post a subject line like that in capitals Mike. You
got my heart thumping!

>How willing are each of you to come along for the ride? I'm not asking if
>you'll "switch over" to digital--I have yet to see it written that if you
>use digital, you can't also use K2s, LXs, and MZ-Ss. But WHERE are you in
>your understanding of the new ways of making pictures, and HOW DO YOU FEEL
>about becoming forward-looking as well as backward-looking, and...will you
>still BE LOYAL to Pentax when most new product introductions are digital???

If I had Canon glass, I'd already have a D30. I don't, I have Pentax and
other K mount glass, and cameras. As a result, I am waiting for the
full-frame CCD (or whatever) chip in a K mount body to arrive. I will
definitely buy one. It's juts a question of when.

I recently bought a digital camera: an Apple QuickTake 150! 640 X 480
res, just for taking snaps of eBay merchandise, and amusing children.
Compared to modern point and shoot digital cameras, it's as big as a
wardrobe.

I guess I am very brand-loyal. Plus I'd rather not change the glass, so
it seems reasonable to wait for the Pentax offering. The MZ-S gets good
marks from where I'm standing, and if the MZ-D (or whatever) is anything
like as well-built, I'll be happy. Looks very coooool, too. 6 MP, if
indeed it will be, or anything close is super-duper. Heck, I'd still bite
if it was only half that.

Cost is important. Initially, it'll be too high. I will wait about a year
for obvious bugs to be ironed out, possibly on the launch of a revision 2
model. I would expect the price to fall about 10 or 15 percent by then,
and I will have one. I'll probably have to buy on credit, I'm expecting
to have to pay about a couple of grand (UK) Sterling - maybe more. No
problem.

As far as how I feel about digital? My chief objective is to produce
images, with output either to print or web. Equipment used in the process
is largely incidental. A camera will always look like a camera, some form
of box with some form of light-gathering device, with some form of image
capturing device.

Film has held the latter for a long time, and I think it will hold that
place for a little while to come. But as the new generations grow up, I
have no doubt film use will significantly decrease. I think one always
gets a little reminiscent at time, but that's offset by all the fun I'm
having doing it digital. I already scan my images onto computer -
changing the method of capturing the images is simply a logical extension
of that - providing the new methods give as good results, with a
long-term matching of cost-effectiveness. Thirty years from now,
capturing images on film will cost a lot more than digital. Pioneers
always pay through the nose!

I'm quite happy with the transition. But I wouldn't get rid of my LX for
all the tea in China!

Cotty
