Do not put film into checked luggage. There were warning signs about this at San Francisco, San Jose, Heathrow, Luton, Douglas and Nashville airports on my last two trips.
It is best to carry film in clear plastic sacks, optionally in an "XRay Proof bag" as well, and ask (beg) for hand inspection as part of carry-on luggage. Carry on luggage scanners are much less likely to fog film. Or buy it at your destination, process it there before flying home.
