Yes. But 40% more on price, 50% more on weight, larger too. AND I  
could not find a single person (at the time I was looking for one in  
2004) who had any experience at all with the Tamron nor any examples  
of its rendering qualities. Still haven't seen more than two or three  
photos taken with it.

I couldn't find any examples of the DA14 rendering either, but the  
DA14 plus the *ist DS body cost me only $200 more than the Tamron  
would have, and about half what the Canon EF14/2.8L would have ...  
and my testing with that one had been very disappointing.

I've since made more than 1800 photos with the DA14 and feel very  
good about it. ;-)
