No accounting for it, just that it happened. The 24 x 36 format of 35mm just didn't fit an 8 x 10" print format, while you could get 4 x 5 negatives to fit the format precisely. Folks were using a lot of 4 x 5 cameras back then. It was normal to see the press shooting 4 x 5.
