Of course there's no glass, but in my book, construction quality rates highly, too.
I feel this way about some polycarb lens bodies: they just don't have the same "feel" that the older brass lenses did when using them manually. Obviously, there's a big payoff in battery life (due to weight savings) on auto focus cameras, and probably some manufacturing costs, but that "feel" is important to me...
