As I said in my reply to Dave, the combination my aging eyes and the modern bright viewfinder may not have allowed me to recognize the backfocus. Shooting macro the other day, trying to bring the tip of a fountain pen into focus, I found that I could not identify sharpness reliably; I wound up "bracketing" the focus to some degree.
The focus adjustment is actually pretty easy, and is well worth doing.
