Yes, other manufacturers have QC problems like this.  The final QC has 
always been the consumer, but the QC at the manufacturer was better in 
the past. QC costs money, and in my experience is usually done by 
technicians who wish they were doing something else, that paid better.   
Much easier and cheaper to correct the units that get complained about 
than make sure that every unit is up to standard.  If it weren't then 
they'd all leave the factory without needing adjustment.  Another issue 
is it's much easier to "correct" a problem in a system with mechanical 
and digital components using software, if it's a hardware problem beyond 
the scope of the software correction, such as a focusing screen being 
out of alignment with the film plane it may take several trips to a 
technician before the actual mechanical problem is even investigated.
