Besides stepping up the voltage, most of these battery pack systems
have circuitry that will store a charge in a capacitive manor with
plenty of extra room, so the batteries pre-charge the storage circuit,
which fills your flash unit's capacitor very quickly, and still has
reserve for the next shot (as does your flash's capacitor if you've
only used a portion of it). Saves the time for the batteries in the
pack to charge your flash's capacitor directly.

Hello Paul,
There is circuitry in the unit to step up the voltage. It does give
much faster recycle time than the AA's of any type.

Godfrey is correct. I use two 540 flashes, three sets of
rechargeable
NIMH batteries, all freshly charged, and the Pentax power pack that
takes 6 C alkaline batteries. I also bring a second set of Cs for
the
power pack. However, I don't use Eneloops. I believe my batteries
are
Everready 2300s. Eneloops hold a charge longer but yield fewer
flashes
in continuous use.

You've been drinking or smoking, John. ;-)
Eneloop NiMh rechargeables for flash units make the most sense if
you're going to use them often. Maintenance ... deal with it. ;-)
I don't use flash all that often so I use Lithium disposables.
If you're really serious about doing weddings on a regular basis,
get
a high-capacity power pack for your AF540FGZ. I wouldn't even
consider
taking wedding jobs without two of them and a backup flash unit, at
the very least.
