I had one of those once. Yes, the lack of a collar is concerning. >From my memory, I tended to push down on the camera body during the shot to at least take some pressure of the tripod mount in the base of the camera. Doesn't really help with the lens mount.
I believe Manfrotto makes an attachment that works for lenses like this giving them support.
