It seems heavy compared to most modern lenses but it's only 20% heavier than the A*300 f4.0 and I've not noticed any real problems when that lens is mounted on the *ist-D or Ds and it doesn't have a tripod socket. Maybe the extra 200 grams or so might make a difference but I doubt it.
