Kirk sells a tripod collar for a specific Nikon lens, the last time I looked. They weren't interested in a similar collar for my 300 4.5 FA when last I approached them.

the lack of a collar is concerning.

I believe Manfrotto makes an attachment that works for
lenses like
this giving them support. You might want to look into
that.
