Friend of mine who used to build laser spectrometers (now builds mass
spectrometers) swears by using dish soap with your fingers for cleaning
optical glass.

Never done this with a camera lens -- kinda hard to stick it under the
tap for rinsing -- but it's what I do with my glasses.  If the glass bed
comes *out*, which it after all almost has to do, that might be your
best bet for cleaning it.  No risk of introducing anything damp or
conductive to the circuitry.
