i was using 1 of my pz1ps and my tokina 75-300 af. the window was so close to the feeder the birds all really fill the frame.

Which camera are you using? I've had fairly good luck photographing hummingbirds using trap focus when I had a PZ-1p. A 200mm manual focus lens with the camera set on AF usually works pretty good.
