i can think of several reasons for this besides a pat "NiMh doesn't work well" -- lithiums keep better in the package, provide a more satisfying first time experience, and don't frustrate the more naive customers

i'm not sure we do "know" that, since there are plenty of reports on both sides, it sounds more like a manufacturing defect or a marginal design than a overall failure
