hogwash, if something sounds really sweet live, it doesn't
sound as sweet on a recording if the recording audibly sours
it. Your theory that any recorded music is never as
good as live so it doesn't matter if its taken further
away from live sound doesn't hold up. the whole goal
of hi-fi sound is to make it sound as live and the very
best gear and recordings DO sound closer to live than
mediocre recording and gear.

This is not to say you or me or anyone else cannot enjoy
bad sound recorded music, but the fact remains, if sound
is lost, you cannot enjoy what isnt there, and many times
bad sound is lossy sound. If the dynamics are squashed
(common problem) the punch is gone, if the details arent
there, its like listening with earmuffs on. Sure you can
still enjoy it if its truly great music, but not as much
as you could if you can hear it all with all its original
impact and detail.

please don't tell me what _i'd_ say

i've spent a lifetime enjoying a wide variety of great live music; while

i understand fidelity and the limitations of digital (and analog) audio,

and while i'm somewhat awed by top-notch equipment and its output, i
have no problem with "good enough" for recorded music; good enough is a
holistic evaluation that everone will make differently -- for me it's
more about the expression and "heart" of the music than it is about
absolute fidelity; even with mediocre equipment and lots of background
noise i can really enjoy music; i think that sense of "good enough"
holds for a lot of others too, based on the prevalence of car audio,
iPods, etc.

it's pretty much same with photography for me
