I thought the modern offerings had a burst mode for high speed flash?

So did I. But I'm not too sure anymore :-(

If you're referring to high speed sync (HSS) flash modes, then yeah all half modern pentax cameras support this.

This doesn't really help, though. The camera only does HSS if it detects a dedicated flash capable of it, and also does the triggering using a somewhat different protocol with multiple pulses on one of the flash interface pins, and the triggering uses what Pentax call "special flash emission process", which covers triggering of such things as PTTL (preflash), HSS, wireless, etc.

But without it thinking it has a dedicated flash, it doesn't trigger anything. And even with one, you'd need something that understood pentax dedicated flash protocol in order to provide a trigger signal from it.

All we really need, is an option to just trigger the hotshoe normally at any shutter speed.
