I don't know that I'm lucky. Perhaps. But it seems that those who have
failures seem to experience them in droves, while others have no

There are patterns, it's a problem, you should be able pic up a lens
and have it work after say a 3 month break. I don't always carry my
long glass, it stays in my safe for the most part but I know that when
I do need it it will work. Having to regularly exercise a lens to
guarantee it works is pretty lame (assuming that's part of the
pattern), the only bit of photo gear that I do accept needs a regular
workout to keep it functioning is my now 40 y/o M4.
I think all camera with shutters need some regular use. I have a dozen or
so cameras in a display case. I regularly fire them all off a few times.
I think all mechanical equipment needs regular use. I've been sewing since
I was 14 & it's always been recommended that the sewing machine get used
regularly and to occasionally take the machine to high speeds if you've got
a nice long straight seam to stitch up. Don't cars need an occasional run on
the highway if the car doesn't get a lot of highway driving? I've been
known to fire the shutter button a few times, as well, if the camera has
been sitting idly. Also, I forgot I'd left my DA* 50-135mm in a camera bag
on the floor in a room which has no radiator heat--so the room is on the
cool side by choice--& probably 2 weeks later when I remembered the lens, I
retrieved it and it was cool to the touch. I immediately put it on the
camera and worked it a bit, and it was a tad sluggish after sitting idly in
the bag for a week or two--not good--the cool room stiffened it's joints, I
think, but I worked it and it came round, no problem. Still, I don't do
that any more. Cheers, Christine
