Isn't that a bit like saying there's no reason to play a real piano if
you're going to record it digitally? You might as well use a digital
piano, right?

Wrong.
Pianos and cameras don't have much in common, so there realy isn't a valid way to compare the output from them. At this point, digital has a longer tonal range than colour film and looks better than scanned film.
