i agree with the concept, but using both daily, i much prefer Thunderbird's true nested threading to gmail's "conversations" (based on subject matching)

i often skip threads, not necessarily by "archiving" or deleting them (because new email on the subject will often continue to come in) but by using the Thunderbird's convenient labeling in conjunction with the "read" status (which Thunderbird rightly allows to not be auto-toggled, rather than assuming because you've touched an email you've actually read it)
