I won't recommend any particular brand. Just pick one with sturdy locks and leg sections, otherwise it will collapse on you when you least expect it, and the worst possible time.

P.S. In Phoenix, at my sister's, with the camera with me at all times. Playing 
around with guessing light values and setting aperture, shutter, and 
sensitivity manually. Most of the opportunities so far, people and animals 
aside, have not been especially interesting. Nor have the results, at least on 
the first try. The thought is that with the instantaneous feedback of digital 
I'll get better.
