The moon is an excellent test subject because it doesn't really vary that much. 
 In and of itself, there's only so much you can do artistically with it.  But 
if you want to compare two telephoto lenses, or tripods, on any clear night, 
the moon is going to be pretty much the same.  As a matter of fact, if you keep 
track of what exposures you use for photographing it, after a while you 
shouldn't even need to meter. Someone pointed out to me that the sunny 16 rule 
works with the moon.

For what it's worth, I've got a few attempts at the moon in my night photo

I've tried different lenses, and teleconverters versus cropping and pretty much 
came to the conclusion that if I want the best quality photo of the moon, I 
should just buy one from someone with the proper equipment, such as a telescope 
on a clock drive.
