When I first moved to NY, I lived in a transient hotel on 35th street, just a few doors off Broadway. My roommates were of the grey, furry variety. I used to go to Macy's and hang, because it was a good 20 degrees warmer than my room. I lived on chinese fast food and cheap pizza. Hunan chicken, fried rice and an egg roll sold for less than five bucks at the joint on the corner of 35th and Broadway.
