Ann,

I was having problems with my K20D and SDHC cards 'til I found out there was a
firmware update to address said problem. I was able to recover files using
Lexar's Image Rescue 4 software. It is free and it worked great for me.

With regard,

Robert in Greenville, SC

I knew you meant drivers :-)
and yes! yellow question mark is there ---

right over the second line that says "USB Mass storage device"
So whats my next move?

(I think I may owe you a discount on the lens;-) )

It could simply be a problem of the drives being screwed up. The system
regestery can end up pointing two different device drives at the same
port, which might keep either driver from working properly. In the
control panel open the system dialog, and switch to the hardware tab.
There should be a button labeled hardware, to open the device manager.
Check to see if you have any yellow question marks displayed.

Looks like it is the USB port... computer doesnt seem to know it is
there.

It should be drive F but when I plug either the card reader or my
canon P& S into it , the drive doesn't even come up...

The only drives that come up are C, D , E - E is the big old external
drive...

when things are working with the Vivitar plugged in, Adobe downloader
recognizes F,G,G,H...etc

After I went away and came back and rebooted and plugged in the
creader with a good CF card in it, I got that little chime sound that
you get when things are working... however, when I launched the
downloader
the stuff at that port didn't show up on the list of choices.

Same thing when I just tried to use it for downloading directly from my
point and shoot... that didnt work either.

conclusion - it isn't the card reader thats mucked up ...
The pins look fine and it didnt take much effort to slip a card in..

The 2.0 does appear to be cooked, however - but that isn't a biggy at
all - the files that really matter that were one it are on the computer.

Also - the ACDsee device detector did detect the card reader...

Further, I tried my old 80 GB external drive there and nothing happened.

IDeas??? Anyone??

The only thing to do is to try the bad card in a different device, which
you did already, by using the *ist-D. If it were recoverable by other
than superhuman efforts the *ist-D would have either recognized the
card, and read it normally or asked if you wanted to format it, or
formatted it without asking, (yes, it does that sometimes). CF cards
have their own controller much like any other memory device. If that's
cooked the data may still be there but recovery would be very expensive.

One way to see if your card reader might still be good would be to plug
it into the USB port and use the Icon on your menu bar that accesses USB
devices available on your computer, (and allows you to safely remove
them). If you double click it you'll get a dialog that shows all USB
drives and the drive letter assigned to them. If you see the Vivitar
reader in the list then you have a pretty good idea that the reader is
good.

CF cards do fail, could be that it's time had just come.

Ann,

Does the second card record in the camera?
Yes..

I have several CF cards... the one that failed has been reformatted a
few times already.. it would be nice if I could get the stuff I shot
off it.

One more piece of info - the Adobe downloader asks me to select a
device.. whereas, when things are working properly, it detects it... it
recognizes there is a card reader in the port.

I could have just bopped over to Staples and ask them to try it but
the weather is keeping me from venturing out at least not more than
a few steps.

at the moment I've mislaid the 2gB card (I said mg before, I meant GB!)

Do you have a friend with a
card slot on a laptop in their computer? It sounds as though the
reader
has caused a formatting error on the card.. If the problem is the
reader, then the card can be reformatted. If you are looking for a
trial
horse I have a 1 GB card just gathering dust that you are welcome
to if
that would help

So I was talking more photos of the gear I got (of and with) and a

three

and
I get Memory card error aarrgh.

The pins look ok in the card reader which is a Vivitar series 1 72

Hi speed card/reader writer.

The card is a 2 mb CF card (remember, my camera is istD) when I
put it
into the camera I got the Memory card error message.

The good news is, that except for the photos I took yesterday of
equipment and a couple of chotskas and Ashley are already loaded onto
the computer... nothing I couldn't reshoot...

The bad news is I have no clue what to do to do to make the card
reader come back to life. I put another CF card into it and still no
go...
I'm thinking somewhere on my computer there is something to
explore to
make it all better but can't remember anything.

anyone have any ideas? which is to say, "help!"
