Probably a bug that was introduced in a recent code change. If it is like others that have done similar tricks in the past, the temporary solution is to Disable Instant (search autocomplete): http://practicalrambler.blogspot.com/2011/09/how-to-disable-google-instant-no-google.html
I hate Instant, so the solution of setting my home page to: http://www.google.com/webhp?complete=0&hl=en is my personal preference.
