You'd be better off just getting a set of on/off road tires and giving
it a try first.
Thanks for that advice. I wasn't sure if the bike frame would be
suitable for that. It's good to know. The wheels seem pretty narrow,
though -- so, I wonder if I might need new rims for off-road tires?

Do some research on a sport called cyclocross. The season is about to start. I've only ever ridden in one, I threw my back out in it, and before I had a chance to ride in one again, life happened.

The problem I ran into was that my shoes didn't have enough grip in the mud for carrying the bike up the hill I couldn't ride up. I don't have much in the way of pictures of the race, but here are some shots of the bike I have for riding in off road races:

The problem is that tires for dirt are much worse for riding on pavement.
