Yes, there used to be two volcanoes on Banks Peninsula; one is now Lyttelton 
Harbour (the port of Christchurch city) and the other is Akaroa Harbour which 
is where the French had a go at setting up a colony.  IIRC the volcanoes were 
not active simultaneously (it was a a few million years ago and my memory is 
hazy).  Eventually they went extinct and glaciers ground them down, which is 
where all those stones come from.

The peninsula was originally an island but was joined to the mainland by the 
glaciers coming across the plain from the alps.
