Funny you should mention the 35-105/3.5.  I've got one with a 
small ding in the front element, which replaced one with a 
scratch in the front element (the one stolen when my house was
burgled a year ago).  In both cases, the marks were filled in 
with black ink (to prevent flare from the edges of the damage) 
when I got them.  No problem using either lens, despite how
conspicuous the marks are when looking at them from the front.
