I have a theory on this. In the USA, there is still a very high value placed on personal integrity, so it is fairly safe to accept a cheque from an American. Other societies, Canada being a prime example, have allowed this value to erode, with the consequence that accepting a cheque is an invitation to be out the face value on the cheque. The company I work for (Wal-Mart) no longer accepts cheques in Canada, I suspect because bounced cheques were cutting into the bottom line.
