Dan,
1.  Get the image in macro focus as you want and CLAMP it down so it
doesn't creep out of focus.
2.  I've never used it, but limiter stops that annoying behavior of
hunting from infinity to minimum focus for the right spot.
And really old school is the A100/2.8 Macro...
