A pliers was able to pull it out - it was a tight fit - and there's a screw
under there like there should be...

I emailed the previous owner and asked him if he was missing a locator pin from
a battery grip and he replied in the negative.

Does anyone have a clue what its function could be?

On my K5, there is an empty hole there. Also, there is an empty hole below it and kitty corner to it. My grip is MIA at the moment, so I can't say if they are locator holes for the grip. Whatever it was, it was put there by a previous owner for nefarious reasons, I am sure.
