Actually, the end of it is squared-off.  You can set it down on the end that 
was inside the recess of the baseplate of the camera.

AND

It took some effort (a good solid grip 'n' pull) with a needlenose pliers to 
extract it.  A pretty firm press-fit.

The previous owner replied that, yes, he was missing a bit but that everything 
looked and felt stable, still, so he's not worried about it.  So I won't worry 
either.
