The Pentax flash extension cord that I bought along with the 540
cost me something like $50, and more or less worked, most of the
time. I picked up the one from link delight which is a hot shoe
extension (the shoe for the other end of the cable would have
cost me another $30 from Pentax), and cost me $5 or $10, and I've
never had any problem at all with it.

I find it tremendously useful to put the hot shoe end of it on my
monopod, and use it to lift my flash up away from my camera. I can
either put one of my milk jug fong dongs on the flash to get a good
spread of light, bounce it off the ceiling with a lot less inverse
square light path loss, because it's so much closer to the ceiling,
or just manually zoom the flash out so I don't have to aim too accurately.

By the way, the one time that I use flash in P-TTL mode is when
I'm photographing people spinning fire. I set my shutter speed
to get the amount of fire trail that I want. I then set my aperture
so that the fire is exposed correctly, and I use the flash on PTTL
to freeze the motion of the dancer. I may dial in a bit of exposure
compensation ( negative one or two stops ).

This is what I did when we photographed the fire spinners when you
came out to Santa Cruz.
