I meant latex house paint, not acrylic. Seems there are quite a few guides to sponge painting mottled patterns for walls, but this link mentions photo backgrounds:

Not sure what fabric would be most cost effective though. Commercial cloth backdrops are generally muslin; must be a good reason for that. Also don't know about washing your DIY backdrop. Commercial ones are washer safe. Best if you can avoid walking on it so washing isn't an issue, I guess.
