We're just about to enter yard sale season around here, and I figure I can pick up quite a few bargains in the way of backdrops and props. I never thought about using dyes, but that is a great idea and quite a bit cheaper than latex paint, to boot.

Thanks for the tips, John & Bruce!

When I made my first DIY backdrop, I bought a King-Size Martha Stewart white sheet from K-Mart (they were on sale REALLY cheap while she was in the slammer) and mixed up RIT dyes in a bucket & slung it on with a paint brush. It's certainly washable.

I meant latex house paint, not acrylic.

Seems there are quite a few guides to sponge painting mottled patterns
for walls, but this link mentions photo backgrounds:

They are assuming a big sheet of foam-core but I think you should be
able to paint fabric the same way. Not sure what fabric would be most
cost effective though. Commercial cloth backdrops are generally
muslin; must be a good reason for that.

Also don't know about washing your DIY backdrop. Commercial ones are
washer safe. Best if you can avoid walking on it so washing isn't an
issue, I guess.

Keep in mind what David Hobby (The Strobist) often does with a
background: gaffer tapes it to a wall. No stand required. Don't be
tempted to use duct tape -- you shouldn't need to ask why. :-)

I mentioned the backdrop thing to an artist friend and she said it's
fairy easy to create random mottled patterns--it's a stock technique.
I haven't got all the details yet but I gather that armed with a nice
palette of three compatible colours, plus a big brush, rollers and
sponges, you can lay the cloth or paper out on a big floor and go to
town. I figure interior acrylic house paint would do.

A project for another day. I was lucky enough to pick up a 10'x20'
medium grey muslin for $20 a while ago and it's waiting for the right
shoot.

Thanks, Walt!

Beautiful, Bruce.

That background is something else. I'm just about to put together a DIY
background stand made of PVC pipe. Then, all I'll need is a Louise.
