Probably the least expensive, that produces reasonable, (OK, you define
reasonable but it seems so too me), output, is currently the Epson
Perfection V550 which replaced the V500 at a slightly lower MSRP with
slightly higher specifications. Figure he'll pay less than $150. + Tax
and or Shipping so the damned thing is disposable once it's out of
warranty. Which is pretty much the way you have to view anything these
days.
