John -- and Eric -- I just tested: an email to the list from an unsubscribed address just disappears silently into the bit-bucket. I expect this is an expedient anti-spam measure.
If messages were being blocked by the server, they would (should) be bounced back to Eric after a time. The server has to actually accept mail in order to "eat" it. Has Eric tried re-subscribing to the list? And it would worth his while to create a Gmail address and use that to run some tests. He can always delete it later if he wishes.
