The discussion has strayed a bit from the original subject (which was
the brand new 1/2 thick MacBook Air). The battery issue goes way
beyond not being user replaceable. It uses a new technology of thin
"tiered" batteries which make the maximum use of the curved cavities
of the MacBook. From an engineering standpoint is is brilliant. But
like most first generation technologies, it is also unproven. Even if
you could pay someone to replace the batteries, there needs to be a
stockpile of replacement batteries from which to draw. If they are
made specific to a particular model's cavity, how plentiful do you
think those spare parts are going to be.

As I said, this is not an exclusively Apple problem. We have a
business laptop made by Dell that has the exactly the same problem.
Replacement batteries are no longer available, and this is a high end
laptop that is less than 2 years old and not using some totally
individually shaped battery like the new MacBook Air. Toss it and buy
a new model.

I'm surprised that no hardware company has yet adopted the Adobe CC
subscription model. Instead of paying $700 for photoshop, you pay
$9.99 a month for the rest of your life. There is a number at which
this makes sense for hardware manufacturers also. As long as they lock
you into their brand... you pay so much a month and you get the latest
hardware every so many months. Imagine if Adobe buys a company like
Dell (or vice versa). They can create bundles of Creative Cloud and
the hardware to run it on for one low-low monthly "subscription"
amount.
