I struggled with that too. A few years ago there was something called 'websites that suck'. One of the faults they criticized was 'mystery meat', which meant not making the controls obvious and visible. Since the dawn of smartphones and tablets mystery meat seems to be flavour of the month and I think people have learned that everything is clickable, or at least that if you don't know what else to do, try clicking something, > Nice photosnaps though...
