It'd be nice to preserve it but hideously expensive and very difficult to do 
safely.  And that's before you consider trying to bring it up to modern 
earthquake standards.  What's left of the building is badly cracked and 
considered unstable which is why the perimeter inside the fence is so wide.

Whatever the outcome it'd be nice to see some progress being made.  I don't 
have a preference one way or the other.

On a brighter note we also visited the great hall at the Arts Centre (the 
former university) which is built in the same neo-gothic style.  The whole 
complex is being restored and strengthened and is looking pretty good so far.
