Yeah, I'd like to see it restored as well, but a couple of things occur
to me.

How far gone is it? I read that the structure that was supposed to
stabilize the rose window contributed to its destruction in subsequent
recent earthquakes.

And what about future earthquakes? Will a restored structure stand? Or
will it have to be restored again and again? ... and at what cost?

Maybe a new one is the best answer.

I have seen a number of these situations, and they always frustrate me.

Personally, I would like to see a building like that preserved. I don't
own the buiding, however, the church does, and the church shouldn't be
forced to restore it. If the well-meaning "preservationists" was to save
it, let them raise the money to buy the property and restore the building.

I shot this through a gate in the fence.

There are a lot of politics going on behind the scenes here. The Anglican
church, who own the cathedral and the land it's on, want to knock it down
and replace it, but there's a vocal opposition who think it can be made
safe and restored on a reasonable budget. Meanwhile the building continues
to decay while all the money is being spent on lawyers. I'm actually
surprised the recent 7.8 quake didn't make the decision for them.

Dave
