these are nicely done; what interests me most is trying to put myself in
the head of Brits trying to imagine the US through these pictures
The copy says he's following in the footsteps of Shore, Eggleston and Frank,
but they all showed the USA in a way that hadn't really been seen before. I
think the comparison is very flattering to this guy, whose photos are fine, but
in my opinion are not showing anything new or in a new way.
To me they show a rather clichéd view of Americana, influenced by Hopper as
well as the aforementioned photographers. It feels to me as though he has gone
looking for a received idea of the US, and found it, whereas Frank and
Eggleston (I'm not so familiar with Shore) were able to change the way we
experience America because they saw it anew.
