That's always been my understanding, too.  But as John pointed out, the
M series appeared only about a year after the K series.  That's a very
short time frame for development and production of a new model.  If the
M series was a response to the Olympus OM series, Pentax must have had
prior knowledge that the OMs were coming.  A spy at Olympus, perhaps?
